Vacation Rental Homes, Are They A Good Idea?

March 5th, 2010

Many people that go on vacation have a preference to rent a home in their destination rather than staying in a hotel. Most of these people do this because it gives them the freedom to cook their own food and eat out when they like without missing set meals that they have previously paid for.

It can be more difficult to find such a vacation rental than simply booking a hotel reservation. However, most holiday makers say that the effort is worthwhile. There are a few points that you should check up on if you are not to be dissatisfied when you get there.

It is very useful if you have friends or family living in the destination locale and if you do have this advantage, you should make use of it, but all is far from lost if you do not. There are often agencies for these types of vacation rentals as many people who live in such places rent their homes out in the peak period and they do this through those agencies.

There are also quite a few web sites specializing in home rentals for holiday purposes. Some of these Internet agencies just charge on behalf of the property owner and others can arrange swaps, which is a great, low-priced way to travel the world.

The surveys that these web sites carry out are usually quite wide-ranging, containing such expected details as the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, but also such information as whether there is a phone, a car, bicycles or scooters on the property, along with distance to the shops, main road, airport, train and bus stations.

However, if you have any questions still unanswered, you are usually encouraged to ask them directly to the property owner via the agency’s web site. It is a good idea to rent a vacation home through a rental agency for security purposes, because if a problem does arise then you have a mediator on hand. In these situations the agency would handle the whole affair, up to the point of criminal proceedings.

You may also like to ask about the age of the property, because often the day to day repairs of the place is down to you while you are there, as are breakages, unless those things are covered by the owner’s insurance policy.

You should also find out whether you are allowed to use the home owner’s bedding, linen, and towels etc.. Often you just treat the house and its contents as your own, unles a cupboard or door is locked and you have not been given the key.

One last piece of advice is to get suitable directions. Places that you are not familiar will look very different in the dark than they do in the daylight, particularly if the property is off the beaten track.

Therefore, if you are expecting to arrive late or if there is a possibility that you might be held up, ask for photographs of key points taken in the twighlight. It will make certain that you get to your destination vacation home rental with no difficulties.

The Ancient History of Barry, South Wales: Part Two

March 4th, 2010

In the 1700’s, dishes, saws, knives, flints, a scraper, a prehistoric horn celt with strange markings, a spokeshave and some arrowheads from the Neolithic Period were found. These are now safely housed in the museum in Cardiff, but at the time no one thought to organize an excavation and later a housing estate was built on the site.

An ancient Roman kitchen, complete with remains and utensils underwent a similar fate. In 1533, Leland was made the Kings Antiquary and was directed to make a tour of all places where records were held. This took him nine years and his description of the island was:

“It is about a mile in circumference and has good corn, grass and some wood, and there is no dwelling on the Island, but in the midst of it is a fair little Chapel of St. Baruch which is visited by many pilgrims. It took the name Barri from this holy man who was buried there and whose remains are yet on the Island”. (The Welsh name for Barry is Y Barri).

Vikings raided the coastline of south Wales in the Tenth Century often taking hostages from the monasteries, but they did not seek to settle the area. The island was known as the ‘Saints’ Retreat’ or the ‘Island of Saints’ for a long time. Later, in the Sixteenth Century, the island was used by smugglers and pirates and was known locally as the ‘Smugglers’ Fortress’. This occurred at the same time as Bristol, Britain’s second largest port, was growing rapidly.

Barry Island became the centre of piracy in the Bristol Channel. In 1784, the island was known as the Fortress of Knight. Knight was the top smuggler and pirate in the area and people were frightened of testifying against him, although he was also something of a local hero. His armed brig’s name was John O’ Combe. He was eventually moved on to Lundy Island, which he also turned into a fortress, although he and his successor, Arthur, still returned so often to Barry, that H.M. Customs requested the government to permanently post a cutter to Penarth and 60 light infantry to Barry.

Rhoose was infamous for its wreckers and George II sent troops to break up the smugglers and wreckers. They landed at Aberthaw “the Rhoose men’s favourite landing zone, from where they could easily transport the contraband along Port Road to Cardiff, the main market for such things”. Several large caves were filled in while constructing the present day docks and it is likely that they were used by the pirates until they were moved on in about 1850.

The Ancient History of Barry, South Wales: Part One

March 3rd, 2010

Much of what we know or have supposed about Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan, in which it is situated has been gleaned from the buildings found there, many of which have been badly neglected for too long. There are also legendary stories, such as that of Joseph of Arimathea, who traded tin in Glastonbury, just across the channel and who was one of the first missionaries to this part of the country.

Tradition maintains that the father of Caractacus took his son to Rome and was converted to Christianity. They returned to the Vale of Glamorgan with the missionary Bran the Blessed. We do know that Christianity had become fairly popular by the early 4th. Century and that south Wales sent some bishops to the Council of Rome.

One of the oldest shrines in the vicinity is St. Baruch’s Church on Barry Island, but it is also in very poor condition. Barry Island was one of the most important monastic retreats of the period in south Wales. Steep and Flat Holm islands in the Bristol Channel were also highly significant in this regard. Another very important part of the puzzle was St. Illtyd’s Seminary in Llantwit Major which had 2,200 students.

There was an ancient Roman fort and accompanying naval dockyard on Porthkerry Point, which had obviously jutted out further into the sea than it does now and later a castle was built on their ruins. There have been found many wolf and deer bones between Sully and Barry – enough to show that they had existed there in great numbers. There have also been a large number of findings of arrowheads, flints, needles and coins, proving that people were there to prey on them too.

‘The Island’, as it is known locally, was first named Baruch’s Island after St. Baruch, who was found washed up on one its beaches dead in 700 AD. He had been drowned on his return from Flat Holm, where it was common practice for religious students to spend Lent.

He and Gwelches were disciples of Saint Cadoc at that time and on their return to the island, they realized that they had forgotten their enchiridion or religious manual. St. Cadoc made them do back to fetch it. Neither men returned alive. St. Baruch’s most acclaimed student, St. Illtyd was educated there.

Barry Island has had its name changed several times over the centuries. It was once called ‘Island of the Saints’ and ‘Insular of Peiros’, after St. Peiro, who was St. Illtyd’s successor at the seminary at Llantwit Major. He was also St. Samson’s luminary. There was also a St. Doeninas, who was abbot of a nearby abbey on Friars’ Point.

Anger Management Resources – Movies

March 3rd, 2010

It is because anger management is a huge problem in society today, there have been many programs developed, books written, Internet websites created and anger management movies filmed. Although all of this help is in place and available for anyone, not all people with anger issues benefit from the same type of resource. For some people attending an anger management program may be effective and cause major changes in their behaviour.

Being able to get away alone with a book can be helpful to a person with anger management issues. Seeing their problems in print and being able to sift through them in their head might be one of the best anger management resources. The Internet is a great resource regarding anger management and some may find it helpful to view the different websites and read stories about individuals with anger management issues. However, for many people who have difficulties controlling their anger, watching an anger management film might be what is needed to break them out of their pattern of angry, emotional flairs-up.

Watching an anger management movie would allow the person the opportunity to see, with their very own eyes and hear with their very own ears, just what anger does to a person and those around them. An anger management video should give illustrations and situations where individuals act on their anger. The film may apply exactly to an individual’s current circumstances. It may strike home – so to speak. Watching the actors play out their life stories and their behaviour may be an eye-opener. It may take watching a husband beat a child or wife, a mother attacking her kid, a child bullying another kid, to understand that anger is a significant problem to them.

When an angry person is in that situation- ie really angry, he is likely to blame it on whoever gets in the way. But being an actor in his own film, he is incapable of watching his own performance. However, if they given the chance to see it on the big screen, he might be surprised and even devastated by what he has done. Watching an anger management film would probably be like watching yourself in a similar situation. This may be the method that works best for some individuals.

An anger management movie will not only give illustrations of actual scenes involving anger. The film will probably give information regarding anger management methods. Using these techniques and the characters in the film, it is likely that there would be scenes of people being introduced to anger management methods and programmes.

The movie would explain the steps to dealing with anger and frustration issues. This type of anger management movie might be the answer to many people’s problems. It would be a good idea if the anger management movie showed the person, in the same situation as the sufferer, change from the first scene to the last scene. Showing how the individual was able to receive help through anger management and turn their lives around, may just be the incentive needed.

No doubt, there are all sorts of anger management movie available. The Internet is a great source of information regarding anger management and anger management resources such as books and anger management movies. If you think you or someone you know would benefit from watching an anger management movie, it would be a wise idea to get your hands on one.

Decorating Wedding Cakes

February 27th, 2010

Nearly every family or social occasion involves the eating of food and the imbibing or liquids in the celebration. Think of Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings. In this piece of writing, I would like to talk about that centre piece of any wedding reception: the wedding cake.

The guests come to eat, drink and be merry and the bride’s parents always put a great deal of effort into the preparation for the wedding party. The wedding cake is the central point of the top table and the whole function in general. The wedding cake has traditional significance and it is often thought bad luck not to have a piece of the wedding cake.

There are precise rules for the timing of the cutting of the wedding cake that have become part of tradition. For example, if the wedding reception takes place at lunch or dinner, it is traditional to cut the wedding cake just before the sweet is served.

However, if the reception is to take place in the late afternoon or early evening, the cake is served as soon as the guests arrive. In some traditions the bride and groom cut and eat the first slice together as a symbol of their vows to love, honour and obey each other. The remainder of the cake is generally cut by one of the assistants, like the maid of honour or a family relative.

It can be quite difficult to choose the wedding cake. Traditionally, people go for a white cake with white icing for weddings, however nowadays, people are becoming more daring and are choosing more exotic flavours and colours.

Some couples choose to have a wedding cake which has different flavours on each layer. While white icing is still the overwhelming favourite, people do order other colours like pink and yellow. Chocolate and mocha are also popular. These days you can have what you like. It is your day, after all.

Everyone likes the wedding reception. It is the favourite part of the wedding day and everyone looks forward to seeing the cake cut and sharing it with the bride and groom.

If you are considering becoming a cake decorator, you have a few choices to go about it. You could buy a book or a course or get a video in order to teach yourself how to decorate cakes from the plain to the ornate. You could also go to a night school class to learn the art or cake decoration.

Without a doubt, the very best way to learn cake decorating is to take a course. DVD’s, videos, and books are all well and good, but you cannot talk to them or ask questions. If you take a class for three months or more you will learn more and get a deeper understanding of the art of cake decoration. You will learn how to put real feeling into the decoration of the cake and you will be able to translate the wedding couple’s dreams into a cake that you and they can be proud of.

Are You a Separated Dad? So, What? Dating for Single Dads is Easy!

February 23rd, 2010

Are you a divorced dad? So what? As long as dating for single dads is easy! Can a divorced Dad be a great father? Perhaps a divorced guy should also ask: “Why not?” Just because you’re not divorced, it does not mean that you are not a great father. It’s really such a pity that our society considers someone as a dead beat parent just because he’s divorced. There are a lot of wonderful divorced fathers out there and you can learn a lot from them.

Keeping It Close. You’ve got to admit that children suffer a lot from the consequences of divorce. From irate parents, to separation anxiety, it’s a tough world out there for children whose parents are divorced or getting divorced.

Preserving a relationship with the children require sacrifice. Usually, both mother and father have to be able to set aside their differences long enough to inspect the damage that they have both caused to their children. More often than not, parents get so engrossed with their emotional pain that they fail to notice that their children suffer even more than they do.

If you are a single parent this is very difficult. Dating for Dads and dating for mothers is the answer – don’t rush into things, but children need two parents and when you’re ready, you should get another partner.

Studies show that when two parents make a conscious effort to stay close to each other, then they have more successful and stable children. What more do you need to know? Children need two parents. Never think that dating for single dads is out of the question. In fact, it is important for the kids. You know it is, don’t you?

Study: To make the importance of a father being close to his children more obvious, the State University of Arizona conducted a study of college students whose parents were divorced. The researchers observed personality, emotional and mental maturity, health, and even interest in school and success. The researchers found evidence that supports the idea that whichever parent had primary custody, it is certain that children need access to adults of both sexes. Widow(er)s need to get back into society for the sake of their children and the, selves.

Findings: The results are quite surprising. Statistical evidence clearly shows that children whose parents are separated have healthier and more mature relationships than their parents and make a conscious effort of keeping the family together.

Just over 60% of the children involved in the study asserted that their mother or, whoever had primary custodianship over them, moved them at least an hour’s drive away from where the other parent lived. The students were particularly worried about getting caught in the crossfire. Furthermore, when they stayed with one parent, future financial help (like for school or college) lessened. For example, if they stayed with Dad, Mum gave less when college came, and vice versa. So, the fact is that the 1 hour distance between them already had a negative effect on the children.

Emotional upheaval cannot really be prevented, but a closer inspection of the children showed that those whose parents stayed close to them had a better emotional disposition and a better mentally.

Summary: All in all, the case study shows that divorce does affect children. The way the parents treat each other and the distance they live from their children does have a significant impact that could determine whether the child succeeds or not. It is difficult to make friends with an ex-wife after all that has been said and done, but it will be more difficult for you as a divorced dad, when in the future, you see your children suffer the consequences of your actions.

As a divorced father, it is it is up to you. You owe it to yourself and to your children to make first step to remaining close.

What is Clinical Depression?

February 23rd, 2010

Depression is a mental disorder that is quite often characterized by lengthy periods of sadness and melancholy, say the experts from the field of psychiatry.

But just because a person is moping around and generally hating the world around him or her, doesn’t mean that he/she is suffering from depression, but if this kind of behavior, the feeling of emptiness, loss of self-worth and absolutely no hope for happiness just goes on and on, then, that individual is probably, indeed, depressed. Still, there are various types of depression too.

Manic or Bipolar depression is characterized by sudden and extreme mood swings – one minute he or she is euphoric while the next minute (day or week), he or she feels as if he or she is hades.

Postpartum depression is characterized by a prolonged sadness and a prolonged feeling of emptiness by a new mother where physical stress during child birth, an uncertain sense of responsibility towards the new born baby can be just some of the possible reasons why some new mothers go through this.

Dysthimia is characterized by a slight similarity with depression, although this kind has been proven to be a lot less severe, however. as with any case of depression, it needs to be sorted out immediately.

Cyclothemia – characterized by a nominal similarity with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the individual suffering from this mental illness suffers from severe mood swings.

Seasonal Affective Disorder – characterized by being depressed only during specific seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, Summer or Autumn). However, studies prove that more people actually become ill during the Winter and Fall seasons. Or they could suffer from mood swings, wherein a person’s mood may shift from happy to sad to angry in quite a short time.

‘Clinical depression’ or as some might call it, ‘major depression’, is the actual medical term for depression. Actually, clinical depression is more of a disorder than an illness, because it refers only to those who are suffering from symptoms that cause depression.

However, despite being a real disorder, clinical depression can be treated quite successfully. Doctors are usually highly optimistic that patients suffering from clinical depression will soon be well on their way to good mental health if they receive treatment as soon as they have been diagnosed. Patients who have sought treatment for clinical depression have proven to be very successful in their hopes, since 80 percent of those treated have found relief from their illness.

If you are looking for answers to questions related to clinical depression, the depression section of the health centre can be highly recommended, as well as books on psychiatry and the Internet, which offers a great deal of helpful information, although self treatment is highly frowned upon. Clinical depression may not pose as much of a threat as the other types of mental illness, but it is best to leave to the professionals who can safely attend to and cure this disorder.

Clinical depression can be a very debilitating disorder and is so distressing to suffer or witness. Learn more here: Treating Depression Get a totally unique version of this article from our article submission service

The Signs Of Love In The Zodiac

February 19th, 2010

Many people believe that the stars can provide a lot of insight into ourselves, our past and our future. This information can include how, when, and with whom we are most likely to fall in love, although it can go a lot further than that too. This is not to say that astrology is the same as a chart of your destiny, so although the one you love may not be a perfect match for you in astrological terms, it does not mean that you should not create a relationship.

There are a few ways by which you can start to appreciate the universal forces that attract someone to their partner or anyone else. If you learn to interpret or even master these forces, you will also gain knowledge of how to make any relationship work better and learn to know yourself at the same time as well.

One of the best ways to begin, is to find a horoscope of yourself that seems fairly truthful. In this way you will discover a writer of horoscopes that you can trust. Not everyone is at the same level of advancement and this goes for horoscope writers too. Some are novices some are experts, most are in the middle and some are charlatans.

Once you have your own fairly truthful horoscope, get one done by the same person for the one you love or would like to get on with better. Try not to read too much into what you imagine you know until you know that you know it. For example, you might be a Capricorn (a ram), so it might sound logical to be weary of a Leo (a lion) as the two animals are enemies in real life. But learn more; do not jump to conclusions.

You can start to compare the two zodiac signs for complementary and contrasting traits, likes and dislikes though. You can go into as much depth of detail about the ideal zodiac partner for you as you like. However, be very suspicious of letting the zodiac analysis rule your life and decision-making. Do not give up on someone just because their horoscope seems to clash with yours. Rather, use the details you read about the other person to communicate better with them.

There really are rather a lot of very informative books and web sites to help you on your mission to figure out the details of your zodiac match. So do some research and have some fun with it. However, be prepared to unearth a few surprises. You will probably find that the author of the book or web site is closer to understanding you by your zodiac sign than you would ever have assumed, which means that the author is probably fairly accurate with your partner too.

Once you have been investigating the zodiac for a while, you will look at people differently and you will be very curious about other peoples’ star signs. You will want to know whether you can guess a person’s sign of the zodiac and whether you can forecast his or her reactions.

Wedding Favours

February 18th, 2010

There are many gifts that can be given as wedding favours, after all the point of wedding favours is to illustrate to your guests that you are grateful for them coming to your wedding and expressing their support for your wedding. Therefore, you ought to really try to find wedding favors, that your guests will be keen on.

Naturally, the gift that most appeals to your guests, may not be one you would choose for yourself, but you are buying the wedding favours for your guests, not yourself. If you think about it, you should be able to come up with something that everyone will like and that you are pleased to give. In order to help you get the task done, we will offer you a few tips below.

Love spoons are a prevalent souvenir at Welsh and other Celtic weddings. A love spoon was a wooden spoon carved by a love sick man for the woman he cherished. She would then either take or reject the love spoon, although she was not bound by the acceptance of the spoon. Miniature copies are often used as wedding favours. They can be carved with dates and names and symbols of love such as a hearts, bells, vines, key holes, anchors and knots.

Wedding favours can also be suitable to eat. There are a lot of choices available for couples who wish to give their guests some type of edible favour. You can have many items personalized these days. Some firms specialize in personalized presents, which can also be given as wedding favours. Some examples of edible, personalized wedding favours might be: chocolate bars, mints, biscuits or gourmet chocolates. The box or wrapper could bear your photo or / and your names and the date.

Small wedding cakes are another concept for edible wedding favours. Miniature wedding cakes have a short shelf life so they will have to carry a warning, which will probably be put on the packaging automatically, but it is worth checking.

A half / quarter or small bottle of wine or other drink would also be fairly easy to arrange as wine bottle labels can be bought in any home brew shop.

Picture frames are frequent wedding favors. You could give a picture frame and follow it up with a photo of the beneficiary of the frame enjoying your wedding reception. This might be costly and tricky to set up as you will have to keep records of who has been photographed and who has not. It would be dreadful to miss someone out, would it not? You will probably also need a professional photographer or at least a dedicated amateur.

Wedding favours can be anything really, but I reckon that they are best if they are useful. We gave very atypical bottle-openers away at our wedding. They had a pattern of a couple getting married, our names and the date. They also had a magnet in them to collect the bottle top as it came off. I have seen dozens of our bottle-openers stuck on our friends’ fridges over the years and the wedding was three years ago.
